When writing an article or blog post, it is very common to link to external websites or blogs. When I say linking to external websites, I’m talking about all links you place like the affiliate links, links to source material, social media links, etc.
When a site visitor clicks the added link, the link loads in the same window or tab essentially making the visitor exit your website. So for most bloggers, the rule of thumb is that they make the internal links open in the same window and the external links in the new window or tab.
But the thing is unless otherwise specified, WordPress opens all the links in the same window or tab. This results in higher bounce rates, which is not that good for your blog or website. So if you ever want to, here is how you can open external links in a new window or tab in WordPress.
Open External Links in a New Window or Tab
The good thing about WordPress is that you can actually configure the links to open in a new window by selecting the checkbox “Open link in a new window or tab” in the Insert/Edit dialog box. Of course, if you want to, you can also nofollow all external links with a single click.
On the other hand, you can also automate this task and open all external links in a new window. To do that, download and install the Open External Links in a New Window plugin. Once installed, activate the plugin by clicking on the link “Activate Plugin.”
Once activated, all the links that point to other websites will be opened in a new window.
However, if you have internal links that you want to open in a new window or external links that you want to open in the same window, you need to configure the options in the plugin settings page. The plugin settings page can be accessed by navigating to “Settings” and then “External Links.”
That’s all there is to do and it is that simple to open external links in a new window or tab in WordPress.
Hopefully that helps and do comment below sharing your thoughts and experiences about using the above methods to open external links in a new window or tab.
